Today is the Dalai Lama's 75th birthday! I hope he will have many, many more. The world needs this beacon of compassion, good will, cheerfulness, and responsibility coupled with intense erudition and political awareness. I don't believe any other individual has ever combined all those traits and been a public figure with the kind of burdens, traumas, and surely deep, deep sorrow and concern for his endangered people. Like hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of people, I am comforted to see that a human being can live a public lifNe with so much goodness and continue to sparkle like one of the brightest stars in the sky.
