Saturday, girls shopping at the mall

A great thing about National Poetry month for me is that I go through books I've read and find poems I wanted to come back to again.  Here's a short one from Billie Collins, Brooklynite, former Poet Laureate.

AND I discovered in my writing class yesterday that one of my class went to school with "Billie" had a great crush on him but, alas, her best friend was the one he dated. My friend brought in a  poem of his and that sent me to the bookcase when I got home.

Oh, My God!

Not only in church
and nightly by their bedsides
do young girls pray these   days.

Wherever they go,
payer is woven into their talk
like a bright thread of awe.

Even at the pedestrian mall
outbursts of praise
spring unbidden from their glossy lips.

To this I reply that I'd rather hear the girls' "outbrusts of praise" than those the boys are more likely to exclaim.

Funny. It seems that "Oh My God" is exclaimed about every other sentece when girls or young ladies are talking to each other. Yes, boys and young men exclaim other words but, it seems that both have word exclamations that are becomming used by both. Good post -- barbara

Thanks, Barbara. I think Oh,my God has become ubiquitous because of the Internet and TV, for girls -- and their mothers too. I get the impression the boys' expressions are more regional, but I could be wrong.

Billy Collins is a favorite poet of mine. So simple, often. So profound.
